Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco caps fall into several series, and matching the right one matters more than with some other brands because Gelco uses proprietary mounting hardware on several lines. The Model A and Model C single-flue caps are the most common in Allentown’s older housing stock, particularly the brick colonials and Cape Cods around West Park and the 19th Street corridor. These mount with Gelco’s bolt-tension band or direct-screw flue rim attachment, depending on the vintage.

To identify yours, check the underside of the existing cap for a stamped model letter and the flue tile outer dimension, measured in inches across the outside edge. The Model A fits 8″ to 13″ round flues; the Model C handles 9″ x 9″ up to 13″ x 13″ square or rectangular flues. Gelco also produces multi-flue caps in their Model M series, which require crown-based installation rather than flue-rim mounting. Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Is Failing

• Rust streaks down the chimney face. Gelco caps use galvanized or stainless steel, but the spot-welded corners on older units eventually trap moisture. In Allentown’s freeze-thaw cycles, that moisture expands and breaches the finish, sending orange-brown streaks down your brick that won’t wash off with a hose.
• Water in the firebox after rain. The mesh sides on Gelco caps can sag or separate from the lid frame after a decade of snow load. Once the gap opens, wind pushes rain straight down the flue. If you’re laying newspaper to start a fire and the paper’s damp, the cap’s mesh frame is the first place we look.
• Animal noises or nesting debris. Gelco’s standard mesh is 5/8-inch, which stops squirrels and birds but can fatigue at the weld points. A cap with separated mesh might as well have a welcome sign for raccoons, especially in Allentown’s tree-heavy neighborhoods where roof access is easy.
• The cap is tilting or has shifted on the flue. Gelco’s tension-band mounts use a stainless strap that cinches around the flue tile. After years of thermal cycling, the band can fatigue or the screw tensioner can back off. A tilted cap catches wind like a sail and will eventually depart your roof entirely, usually during a March storm.
• Visible cracks or holes in the lid. The stamped steel lid on economy Gelco models is 24-gauge, which dents easily from falling branches and can rust through from underneath if the factory finish gets scratched. Once the lid is perforated, the cap is decorative at best.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s honest work a homeowner can do here and honest work that belongs on a roof with fall protection. Checking your cap from the ground with binoculars, measuring your flue tile from inside the firebox with a tape measure, and confirming the model stamp if you can read it from a ladder at gutter height - that’s all reasonable. So is clearing light debris from the mesh with a brush on an extension pole.

What we don’t recommend: carrying a 30-pound steel cap up a ladder, working on a roof pitch steeper than 4:12 without harnessing, or trying to tension-mount a band around a flue tile while reaching over a chimney crown. The cap has to seat square and the band has to cinch evenly, or you’ll have gaps that let in water and void any warranty. We’ve also seen homeowners crack flue tiles by overtightening, which turns a $300 cap job into a $1,400 flue repair.
